5 Singer sewing machines for kids

When you’re looking to buy a sewing machine for a child you need to think of how a child would look at it. The thing needs to be simple. They need to sew back and forth, a zigzag stitch would be nice too, I loved using that stitch as a child.

That’s about it really. The more complicated the machine the more likely the kid will get overwhelmed. And if you spend a lot of money on a sewing machine, you really won’t want to give them some alone time with it, for fear of messing something up, which can lead to them not really liking to sew at all.

For girls I’m think pretty! You can easily take a simple white machine and add some favorite character stickers to jazz it up. I do that with all my machines. Maybe they love the Frozen movie, you can add stickers like that to the machine. Personalizing it makes it more for them, helping to bring out the creative spirit we all have inside us.

It really makes a difference if they love the machine. And making it pretty is really easy. My stickers stayed on for years. I’m a geek like that.

But are they worth it?

I think if you have a child that is interested in sewing then invest in a machine that will do the job. If you buy them a cheap toy and it doesn’t work then the magic is gone and they probably won’t ever want to sew again. Remembering all the trouble it was.

Now if they have a machine that really works then YES! I think it’s worth it. Just do a little research fist, that’s why I’ve did this blog post to save you some time. I’ve did the research for you. I also started sewing at a really young age because my mom was a seamstress back in the 70’s so naturally I wanted to sew things too.

I’m loving this machine because it’s and easy machine to use. The reviews are great other than a few have the bobbin winder bent, check that out when you first get it and return it if it’s defective. Other than that it’s a sturdy machine for a beginner. Basic stitches are included with a total of 23 built in stitches all together. Great beginner sewing machine for your child and it’s not considered a toy.

The Singer Start 1304Sewing Machine, has 6 built in stitches. It looks cute and is very simple to use. It has a free arm, which means as your child progresses into making clothing or smaller items. The arm comes off so it’s easier to sew them. Mostly like pants legs or sleeves in tops. I’m loving how simple the machine looks and it has a nice look to it.

It comes with the following:

All-Purpose Foot, Zipper Foot, Buttonhole Foot, Darning Plate, Pack of Needles, Bobbins, Needle Plate Screwdriver, Spool Pin Felts, Seam Ripper / Lint Brush, Power Line Cord, Foot Control, Quick Start Guide, Instruction Manual.

My Take: This machine is very reasonably priced and has many bells and whistles that the more expensive machines have also many reviewers just love this simple machine and I’m sure this would be a great first machine for your Kid.

Singer Simple 3232 Portable Sewing Machine

The Singer Simple 3232 Portable Sewing Machine, has 32 Stitches and automatic needle threader (Oh how I love those!) and a one step buttonhole. Wow! If your child is really interested in sewing and they are a little older. This might be the perfect first machine. It is an amazing little machine.

Just remember when reading reviews online, many of these people have never sewed before and the main problem is human error. I think this machine will be wonderful beginner sewing machine for an older child that wants more than the simple 6 stitch sewing machine.

It comes with the following:

All Purpose Foot, Zipper Foot, Button Hole Foot, Button Sewing Foot, Seam Ripper / Lint Brush, Edge / Quilting Guide, Pack of Needles, Thread Spool Caps, Bobbins, L-Screwdriver.

My take on this machine is for the older child. It would be too much for a younger person to figure out especially the automatic threader. But if they are older it would be amazing machine for them.

Singer Tradition 2277 Sewing Machine

Singer Tradition 2277

The Singer Tradition 2277 Sewing Machine has 23 Stitches and also has the automatic threader. It is really the same type of machine as the Singer 3232. The only difference that I see is you get less stitches in this one for the same price as the 3232. So for me I would pick the other machine over this one. But it’s all in the preference of how you like the look of it I guess.

It comes with the following:

An accessory assortment that includes 3 presser feet (All-Purpose, Buttonhole, Button Sewing) for all your basic sewing needs. Included Accessories: All-Purpose Foot, Buttonhole Foot, Button Sewing Foot, Pack of Needles, Bobbins, Thread Spool Cap, Darning Plate, L-Screwdriver, Seam Ripper/Lint Brush.

PRO TIP: Reading the reviews again, you can see that several of the people are newbies at sewing. One little thing can really make a difference in your sewing. If you sew a big fluffy fabric then put in a light weight fabric you can get fuzz down in the bobbin case and that can really mess up your sewing. The tiniest lint can cause a lot of problems. So be sure to clean out the bobbin after sewing a project and make sure your needles are new after a couple projects or when you notice the stitches not working correctly.

My take on this machine is I would buy the 3232 if you have an older child that wants more options in sewing. It has more stitches and that can be really fun.

Singer Heavy Duty 4452 Sewing Machine

The Singer Heavy Duty 4452 Sewing machine, has 32 built-in stitches. This machine has a much stronger motor and faster speed. This machine has many extra’s a walking foot for sewing quilts. Same price as the other Singer heavy duty machines only this one has many extras that the others don’t have.

I’m reading more and more reviews from retired sewers who are opting to buy this machine rather than pay the same price of this machine to get their expensive machine’s serviced. They say this machine has the same features only a tiny bit of a difference that is really not that big a deal.

So many machines are WAY overpriced! I’ll never spend over $400 on a machine again EVER!

It comes with the following:

All-Purpose Foot, Zipper Foot, Buttonhole Foot, seam ripper / lint brush, quilting guide, needles, bobbins, screwdriver, auxiliary spool pin, spool pin felt, soft-sided dust cover.

Bonus included: Even Feed / Walking Foot for layers of fabric, Non-Stick Foot for leather and vinyl, a 5-pack of Size 16 needles and a Clearance Plate for thick seams.

My take on this machine, I highly recommend this machine for an older kid or if you are looking for a quality machine and love the Singer brand. This one is the most expensive.

DON’T BUY if this machine is priced over $200. Put in your cart and wait until it goes down in price.
